Wow! We’re ready for tonight’s episode!
Here’s our silly breakdown of the trailer play by play..
DAVID DUCHOVNY NEW YORK LISTENING PARTY DELIVERED Sorry no photos or videos or sound clips. The album does not officially release untill February 9. So let’s respect the artists and producers.
PHOTOS from the event to be posted HERE in the next 48 hours
Today was special.
I am so moved by these songs I just have to share some thoughts.
David Duchovny was joined on stage today with Pat McCusker, Colin Lee, Mitchell Stewart and Sebastian Modak, interviewed my Monique McQueen (Great Job moderating the Q&A) as we all got to listen to the entire new album, EVERY THIRD THOUGHT. The listening party attendees all left feeling expectations were surpassed.
Kerry Lee announced the day’s activities while Sam Platt played DJ, throwing down three tracks at a time with question and answer sessions in between.
With all the songs, David feels he’s writing country songs, because that’s how he sounds alone with his guitar. Monique says these songs pass the “campfire test”. You can break them down to singers and guitar and they hold up.
First up was HALF LIFE. Laurice remarks that the tempo seems a bit livelier – More energetic. This was the first of many that seemed ready for radio play. At the very minimum, ready for movie soundtrack. On tour, David will joke this song is about science. “Unconditional Love Decays….”.
David says he had a David Bowie feel in mind orginally.
The words are a bit sad. Half Life appears to refer to half of your life los tin a break up but leaving with you empty – “with nothing” – inside. But the music driving the story is also about moving past and picking up the pieces and working though the worst of it.
For those that have heard this song on tour, you are in for a treat. The guys (Pat, Colin, Mitch, Sebastian and other – Hanna rocking some strings, etc.) really had some freedom to play. If you listen carefully, the music is almost playful with subtle rhythmic and countrapuntal flourishes hiding – coyly sneaking through – beneath the surface of lead vocals, intros and bridges.
I had a question about the writing of the song. When the song is live, David appears to want to take the middle of the chorus to a V chord (B chord in the Key of E). David will often drop G# at the end of the word indivisible to a F# which would imply in some he wants the chord to go to the B (D# F#). In most music a phase will end with a strong V-I (5-1). My question was “Did the song original move to a B chord there? I feel David is trying to pull the band down to a 5 chord”
David responds, “You think I’m dragging them down?” (Laughs)
Pat, Colin and I discussed among ourselves about the music theory. David makes a cat sound and says “perhaps you fellas should take this outside…” Long story short we had WAY TOO MUCH FUN TODAY.
EVERY THIRD THOUGHT in contrast is a tad slower and more in the pocket from the live version we have heard the past two years – originally heard by fans in Europe 2016. The arrangement is slightly more exposed, revealing some hip rhythmic hits and vocal harmonies. This was always my vote for the album’s title track. David was pushing for Strangers (in the Sacred Heart).
The final song of the first set was MAYBE I CAN’T. We need this album TODAY to fully digest the new stuff in depth.
– Strangers in the Sacred Heart
– Someone Else’s Girl
All three of these songs are known to us from live concerts over the past two years. All three are similar and familiar, but each had their moments where, again, the band got to play. Especially Someone Else’s Girl, which David attributed to Pat from start to finish, taking the lead on the arrangement. This is the “feel good” track with it’s bouncy reggae feel. Love me some Pat! Laurice says this may be her favorite tune on the album.
David recounted his story of writing STRANGER while gigging in Paris last year, tying his own father’s story to the folks praying for strangers at Sacre Couer. We love Hanna Reid’s violins. Laurice calls it baroque pop, mixing in the classical sounds with the pop rock. If you have not caught Hanna, live, find her in your town. There were also some cathedral chimes and other interesting sounds that helped painted the picture.
David says MO is about over consumption with influences of Fleetwood Mac.MO is familiar, but you can tell David and the band put a lot of work into cleaning up the arrangements and kicking out near perfection. Pat has a very sweet guitar solo I think fans are going to dig.
David went further to say, songs are less of a statement, and more of a cloud, “what ever that means.”
Q: What was the process of writing this album, compared to the first?
A: David said it was more collaborative. Sebastian (Percussionist) said there are a lot more chances, especially with percussion. The other guys elaborated on finding a safe place to speak up and out for ideas.
Q: Does doing all the music and concert touring feel surreal?
David: I wouldn’t say surreal. No, it feels good. If feels… (Audience supplies “Organic” – giggles) Why do I keep seeing that “Organic” in quotes (Finger quote gesture).
“ORGANIC” Is that a meme? David asked the band.
David forgot “ORGANIC” comes from his answer from a previous Facebook Q&A and it stuck. There were unasked questions of possible double meanings in the following looks but it was left at that.
WHEN THE WHISTLE BLOWS started and right away the whole crowd is bobbing heads, tapping feet. It is an amazing song. About half way through I lean over to Laurice, “I think this is my new fave.” Angry Blues Rock song was also the favorite for some of the band.
SPIRAL is a song written by Pat and Colin. David admits a little jealousy when folks say this is their favorite tune from their album. Not sure if it was my third homemade pineapple vodka (homemade by restaurant, I did not sneak in booze), being caught up in the moment, or the song was just that amazing, I started to tear up. I leaned to Laurice. Not hearing me, she shoves pen/paper in my hand. I write “FUCKING AWESOME!!!” She exclaims, “you wasted space on her diminishing note paper space.” The moment was otherwise beyond words.
The set was rounded by another concert tour favorite, Roman Coin. Again, like some of the earlier tunes, this was just a cleaner, better mixed version of the song we have come to love.
SET FOUR has two new songs to us and one that is relatively new, after David debuted Marble Sun in Vancouver last fall.
JERICHO is a bit sad. This tune hit close to home with Laurice as David discussed it’s connection with his father. When the album releases I will give a more in depth review of the song. Hearing it for the first time, I was just taking it in.
LAST FIRST TIME to be fair did not get my full focus and attention. Mainly because I was reflecting deeply on the third set. Again, this was the first time we’ve heard this track and I would like a second listen before further discussion.
MARBLE SUN is one of the new songs that has popped into my head often in the past months since Vancouver. My only criticism today was the percussion track seemed to overpower the song. This is a simple mix issue. The song otherwise is a perfect end. I am not sure you call this a concept album. Every song works as a single, but there are some stylistic themes.
David said this song was an idea from Colin and many ways the most collaborative song on the album, and perhaps his new favorite.
Most came to HELL OR HIGHWATER because of love for David’s work as Fox Mulder or Hank Moody. At least half of the fans at early concerts didn’t even know they were attending an actual concert.
“AN EVENING WITH DAVID DUCHOVNY? What is he doing, Stand-Up Comedy” –this is a direct quote from at least three people I encountered during the first year of concerts.
When I first heard the early release of WHEN THE TIME COMES, I was working on some contracts and Laurice was playing the track. The first lyric I really heard was “Jack and Jill, ran out on their bill…” WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS was my thought.
I did not take this at all seriously until May 12, 2015 at the Cutting Room. Many have heard the story of Laurice, myself and 10 other fans hanging out for pizza, lining up crazy early, sitting right in front of a barefoot Pat and later a singing, dancing, tambourine beating and shaking Gillian Anderson.
I bought an album that night. While everyone else was talking/tweeting about THE KISS (Cue melodramatic music) Listened to it a few times. Two days later I started this blog.
The DUCHOVNIACS were born, or at least something more official. (It was a slow journey with 25 years of fans slowing finding each other at events and expanding. 25-30 concerts later – and New Zealand / Australia bound in three weeks for 6 more (Skipping Wellington for some more time in Melbourne) – I am a bigger fan of the music (as it’s own entity) than ever..
For most fans, HELL OR HIGHWATER was about David Duchovny getting to play and share an experience with his friends and fans. A comiccon meet & greet on crack. Something to hold us over between X-Files and other projects. Out of the millions of X-Files fans around the world, there may be a few thousand that really give the music it’s fair shake to date.
EVERY THIRD THOUGHT will change all that. This no longer some celebrity doing the band thing. This is a legit BAND that happens to have David Duchovny’s celebrity status to open doors and sell tickets. This album deserves attention beyond the X-Files and Californication fandom.
I challenge everyone that will take the time to read this to do a blind test. Play a few of these new songs for friends. Make them guess the band name. These songs stand on their own, many ready for 2018 radio play. Most ready for movie soundtracks and other commercial use. All ready to rock Auckland, Wellington, Melbourne, Sydney, Wollogong, New Castle and Brisbane next month.
See you down under!!!
PS- Super excited to hear some of the acoustic tracks coming. As much as I love the original album, the songs written by David and shaped by the band have become so much more as the musical relationship has grown over the past 4 years now (if you include initial writing, rehearsing and recording times).
THANKS must be given to Brad Davidson and Kerry Lee. If you have not met these two, they are usually at the door or running around doing the jobs of 3-4 each.

PLUS ONE leaves shipper fans some love but some unhappy we did not see the “dirty deed”. We have to give Chris Carter some credit. Whether you love or hate certain choices so far this season, every week we have had lots to talk about after each episode.
BUT FIRST Is William BILL Williamson a real person. “HE” has an IMDB page listed as Love Scene Supervisor with exclusive credits as
PLUS ONE To Show or NOT To Show THAT???
Is Chris Carter watching a lot of South Park? There is that famous episode of South Park when the adults start eating in reverse, shoving food up the back side. But the only time the emit dookie form the mouth is when they talk religion.
Chris Carter has heard a lot of complaints over the years. Was this a Matt & Trey style message to fans? As if Chris is saying…
I am in love with Season 11!
Anything you read here is NOT attacking anyone. Merely making light conversation and observations and lots of speculations.
We never got titling for the location. I miss all those days when X-Files would say GERMANTOWN, GAITHERSBURG, ROCKVILLE, BETHESDA and as a resident of the Washington DC Maryland suburbs think, when did Germantown start looking so urban with fire escapes, etc. We don’t learn till later that this is Hanover County (According to Mulder) and or neighboring Henrico County Virginia (Mulder & Scully meet Arky in the Henrico County jail according to the slate in later scene), just north of Richmond, VA.
Kudos to Chris Carter for using this cover of David Duchovny’s “Unsaid Undone”. At David’s shows this is always a highlight when fans get to go full head bob, and even shake some hips. THE ANGRY SONG perfectly lend itself to the more pop punk style and rave scene.
If you have not had the pleasure, this is exactly what a David Duchovny concert looks like, with X-Files and Californication fans getting wasted, slam dancing and stage dives. Just wait Australia and New Zealand, it’s party time! Starting Feb 20 2018 in Auckland, NZ MORE INFO CLICK HERE
Who is going to catch me from a stage dive? It took two band mates to get me on stage. However Colin and Nate survived. Aussies should be fine… lol
Back to the show… Jared Ager-Foster as Arkie Seavers (Mike’s son? – Growing Pains family? – a few speculated this is a shout out to Arkam – Batman) is the first of many casting triumphs in this episode. We all have known this kid in high school and college.
Doppelganger episode? Clever! I love how this season has become the Simpsons with a different opening sequence EVERY TIME!
Perhaps for the first time since 7th Season THIS felt like home. Mulder is back in the office convincing Scully there is an X-File to investigate worthy of a drive south on I-95.
This was like that first time a young college grad – now living in their own apartment in a strange city – visits their child home – the one you could not wait to get out of just 4-8 years before – and now you realize how much awesomeness you never appreciated before….
That is the X-Files device known as Mulder’s office. We took it for granted. We loved how they parodied this in BAD BLOOD. We think back to all those over head projector and slide shows and potential case files with Scully offering logic’s explanations.
Season 10 teased us with Skinner and Mulder and a few pencils that remained in the ceiling from over a decade before – a true testament to the strength of that dropped ceiling.
Mulder says it all as they “get back to our bread and butter”. Speaking about that “LOVE” SCENE.
Again this feels familiar.
Mulder jumps to paranormal connections.
Scully nods as she hears proof of logical explanations.

While live tweeting the episode I immediately felt the need to give kudos to Karin Konoval (Mrs Peacock to X-Files fans – HOME). SO seeking out here twitter page I accidentally stumbled on to THIS and screamed
Three fellas hangin' out…..Chris Carter, me as Chucky and director @KevHooks on set of #XFPlusOne. Chris and Kevin are two of the finest gentlemen I've had the privilege to work with, and I thank them from my heart for this wonderful opportunity. much love, Karin @thexfiles pic.twitter.com/5iS3D7OO13
— Karin Konoval (@KarinKonoval) January 17, 2018
Karin Konoval’s performance surpasses Ann Dowd in Leftovers as she totally steals the show.
Of course when we first see the can of “DOOKIE” I ask Laurice, is that cat food?”
But thought “Do Canadians actully eat S#!T out of a can?”
When we see Little Judy throwing DOOKIE like a monkey, I die laughing and begin thinking of the DOOKIE/NOOKIE line I wrote above.
Let the shipping begin!
“We had a cancellation, it’s just a suite.” says the motel owner
“We’ll take it” jumps in the eager beaver Mulder
Look from Scully had many “layers:…
“There’s a pull out sofa” She has seen that look before
First of all, I want this pull out sofa – Not as fan collector crap – because it actually looks comfortable.
Who else expected a 2nd Dana when we see Fox lurking over Scully’s bed?
Just a little creepy is Mulder’s smile, watching Scully sleep, no?
What a tease…
Just the case calling…
Not the booty…
This trope never ends well for the inhabitant, especially when your cell mate is yourself. Psychological breakdown would be the best possible outcome.
Mulder reveals one could potentially hang oneself while hand cuffed.
The look from Scully takes me back to THIS and Mulder’s talent with cuffs.
Perhaps auto-erotic asphyxiation is not unknown to these two as well.
Mulder looks down the hall way to briefly reveal Karin as Little Chucky Poundstone. Not sure I would have caught that had I not scene Karin’s tweet merely seconds before.
SPEAKING TO WHO (or was it WHOM)
“You tapping that?”
Mulder quickly changes the subject.
Never mind the makeup and hair job to turn Karin into Judy then Chucky. Just watch Karin’s eyes. The character work is spectacular. I just keep watching this initial door scene. Then add Chucky’s walk and mannerisms. Can we get a prequel spin off called JUDY & CHUCKY?
Watching this exchange over and over is the only reason I noticed this…
HANGMAN as a murder weapon has to be the most original concept of all time. Psychically linked twins are able to kill by filling in the the blanks of a hangman game with the victim’s name. Chucky seems to be the scout for victims.
But by the end Judy and Chucky are able to kill each other. So I assume they both have the same powers, HANGMAN is merely a gimmick for them to make killing more fun. Both appear to be able to send a demonic doppelganger or sorts, Or are the merely telepaths and telekinetic and the doppelganger is another way to make the sinister more playful?
Mulder totally freaks out when he sees himself. Ruining all after glow.
Scully, on the other hand, is chill, even though her other self totally likes to watch.
Is this because she has seen death omens in the back seat before, similar to end of Elegy. Perhaps Doppelgangers are like potential bullies, they just want someone to talk too.
It is now Scully’s turn to creep over Mulder’s bed. MAGIC THREE! (2 for Mulder)
SCULLY “Can you hold me?”
There has been a lot of talk about the next few minutes of television. I happen to love this conversation. First of all my expectation of any kind of physical scene or outcome was non existent after past 25 years of being YOU KNOW WHAT AROUND by Chris Carter lol
So this conversation comes off as awkward. But lets peel back the layers.
SCULLY “It’s gonna happen… We’re gonna get old… retire…. are going to spend time together?”
Translation: I’m tired of fighting the future?
MULDER “I’ll come push your wheel chair, with my wheel chair”
Translation” we will grow old together.
MULDER: “I’ll always be around… offering bullet proof theories…”
SCULLY: “I will always be around to prove you wrong… promise”
Translation: Vows exchanged
yada yada yada
You could meet someone
Do you want kids?
SCULLY “I don’t have anyone to have (a baby) with even if I could…”
We are not together, together
Or is she asking ARE WE TOGETHER
The come the excuses – the world is going to hell,, partially at the hand of President Trump….
“We could lose our jobs”
Scully would be fine, ,going back to medicine, right?
Mulder could resurrect TLGM NEWS
SCULLY “We’ll think of something”
SEX either solves all OR is perfect avoidance/diversion form tension
Pan to Doppelganger
Judy and Chucky are plotting the agent’s demise.
Mulder gets out of bed.
WAIT? Scully is on other side. That was some tossing and turning.
Mulder sees himself.
Running scared back to Dana, we notice Scully is longer dressed
THEY HAD SEX
Of course, is anyone hearing Chris Carter in their ear saying,
“That was Dana’s doppelganger in bed!”
Scully runs to Judy
Mulder heads to Chucky
_ U L _ _ _
_ _ U L _ _
Any one else have a MARTHA moment? (Batmen v Superman)
BOTH NAMES HAVE “UL”
Now the music and tension feel a bit like the old Doppelganger episode.
Mulder wrestles his himself, while Scully talks her other self down.
Judy and Chucky turn on each other. Problem solved with little help from worst FBI agents ever lol
MULDER “If you need me, call me”
SCULLY :Can’t imagine if I will… but then again…it’s not out of the realm of extreme possiblity.”
THEN millions Philes light up a cig, even those that don’t smoke, to celebrate this Mad Men with more empowered women moment.
Of course wee don’t actually see the sex but more than ever we see Fox and Dana communicating with out words how they truly feel.
When Dana opens the door, she all but say “I LOVE YOU” (Or at least WANT)
Fox all but says “I KNOW!”
By not showing your mind gets to play. Your imagination should be on fire and able to fill in the gaps. Drama is all about the moment before the sex, kill, violence, etc. The actual act ends the tension. Old school writing, directing and acting ALWAYS left more to the imagination – not just because of censorship on TV and in the most puritanical times of American TV/FILM.
Sex scenes more often cheapen the drama. The sexual tension and “what if” moments are far more interesting the actual sex on camera. The characters “climax” along with the drama of the story.
Chris Carter, in m any ways, leaves a lot fo our imagination to fill in on purpose. Each one us therefore has a slightly different take away form the episode, season and complete series.
In many ways this episode, especially combined with the past two, has EVERYTHING we missed since season 7 as the x-files we fell in love with 25 years ago.
The office, the agents interrogating victims/suspects TOGETHER, conspiracy intrigue, questioning who to trust, and a lot more Skinner.
In some ways these three episode give us more fulfilling the long awaited romantic moments.
I am only saddened that possibly we only have 7 hours of great TV left. EVER?
It is like finally finding the one thing you have always wanted to only lose it moments later.
But for now I will live and cherish every moment.
BE HERE NOW!
CHRIS CARTER WHY I OUGHTTA….
— WALT FRASIER (@waltfrasier) January 18, 2018
Glen Morgan is a genius.
While we were gushing over Mulder Scully romantic comedy intertwined with the Ramones soundtrack to Mulder’s (and Scully’s???) Unremarkable House becoming the OK Corral many of us glossed over the true horror of THIS.
This morning I was about to tweet how 25 degree weather in Texas could make a lot of ignorant Trump suppprters argue against global warming. This led to me thinking about rich and powerful selfishly lying about science and fake news to keep their profits and power. This thinking soon came back to the X-Files episode of form last week, THIS, penned by Glen Morgan.
Behind all of the Razzle Dazzle, and ad libs about TAINT and ALIEN BUTT HOLES, was a story about the rich and powerful creating an eternal existence for their consciousness in the digital world that will live long after the destruction of our planet via global warming aliens or whatever method.
Imprisoned inside this Matrix are the greatest minds of our time enslaved to keep everything working while the sick and powerful forevermore live out their fantasies.
These powerful players have already given up on our planet. They stopled trying to fix the horrors that they have created and instead of facing Justice I found a way to even beat Death while when the world ends.
We are on the edge of our seats as our beloved Heroes are pinned down by mercenaries in their own home, and the cemetery at the University and even government facilities.
In a Way Glen Morgan has hidden the true horror of this episode in the same way the rich and powerful hide their true crimes against humanity and the earth itself with lies and fake news. We’re looking over here on the left, distracted with all this action and romantic comedy, while Glen slides in this absolutely horrible scenario of the impending end of the world.
Combine THIS with MY STRUGGLE 3 and all we have is few rich and powerful faction fighting behind the scenes for how to save the smallest percentage of humanity who’s going to control what is left in their wake of destruction.
We are no longer talking about saving the world. Those that we trust with our lives and our livelihoods and our votes are no longer trying to fix their problems. The rich and powerful are a hundred percent trying trying to save their own asses from the horrors that they created.
When you peel back the layers of this episode, you reveal Horrors that are just way too close to home and I now see this whole episode in a new light, or should I say dark.
Unremarkable House, Duane Barry, Laughing Buddha, Alien Train – DAY THREE Duchovniacs Field Trip Vancouver edition…
FIRST OF ALL, GUESS WHAT DAY IT IS…
— Hi I'm Laurice (@LauriceF) October 14, 2017
Today was a wild goose chase on some levels with some amazing pay offs around the outskirts of Vancouver and a few downtown. Of course we mostly stayed off Twitter today to support
#WomenBoycottTwitter. Not sure if it did any good because I did not even look all day.
The day started with a drive east to the unremarkable house.
We tried to find a way in but NO TRESPASSING signs and some intense fencing and moist swamps warded most of us away and snapping photos from afar.
I mostly stayed in the car, getting out just long enough to continue this stupid series LOL
Two of us got a little closer
But apparently the TWO occupants don’t like unannounced visitors.
— Blanche N BRod👽™ (@SnowWhite1205) October 13, 2017
After a short coffee break we were off Riverview Hospital. Which we are renaming DUCHOVNIACS HEADQUARTERS. This place is great. You really feel the presence of something dirty, or perhaps demonic. Mostly just screaming for a wrecking ball, if not for the many TV/FILM crews filming.
NEXT STOP – Lake Okobogee – Actually spelled Okoboji AKA Buntzen Lake
Unfortunately the lake, in fact the entire park, was closed. Single tear from two mini vans with 13ppl combined. We all shared that same tear.
The actual lake is called Buntzen Lake which is in Port Moody, just a few kilometers off David Ave. Starting to sense a pattern.
— Hi I'm Laurice (@LauriceF) October 14, 2017
So we get back on the road and headed to Grouse Mountain, where Duane Barry brought Scully and Mulder Almost fell off the Gondola.
This place is a must.
— Hi I'm Laurice (@LauriceF) October 14, 2017
— Blanche N BRod👽™ (@SnowWhite1205) October 14, 2017
Up top on the peak there were bears.
Sorry, here are the real bears.
They even put on a show. Although I am upset we missed Breakfast with the Grizzlys.
Did I mention there was snow up there. The bears are days away form Hibernation. I’m still days away from putting on long pants.
So, while freezing, I drove the crew back to check out the venue for tomorrow night.
At least this time camping out for a great spot, we will fit right in with all the locals sleeping on the streets nearby. (No pictures of homeless here, but this area is rough, and a bit depressed).
… where I got a kid’s meal boat and used as a ridiculous hat…
…we squeezed in a brief stop at the Laughing Statues.
This is the newest X-Files must stop Vancouver spot.
Pretty sunset too.
And the best company…
Then it was off to the Ghost train.
Here is my view of the X-Files display.
Unfortunately my light actually made it harder to film clearly due to extreme fog – which may or may not have been fake as we are not far form the mountains here in Stanley Park.
PS Reason the laugh on Skinner is due to this gem from earlier and the fact we are all very giggly tired.
This was the best $12 I ever spent.
— Karma (@TKKarma) October 14, 2017
Trust Karen and our reactions this is a must do thing in Vancouver this month. The production value was great. With 15 X-PHILES in tow, this was the week’s highlight so far.
Of course it was so cold no one saw my shirt today.
By the end of the day we were a caravan of three mini vans and SUVs with 16 PHILES / DUCHOVNIACS enjoying a very full day of THE X-FILES and VANCOUVER tourist stops. Guess what tomorrow is!
EARTH CHILDREN ARE WEIRD – X-FILES PICTURE BOOK (MY REVIEW BELOW)
One the most beloved TV shows of all time is now a sweet, silly, sci-fi bedtime story! In The X Files: Earth Children Are Weird, best pals Dana (Scully) and Fox (Mulder) have pitched a tent in the backyard for a sleepover. But the night is full of strange sounds, lights, and shadows. Surely there’s a rational, scientific explanation for everything . . . or is there? With beautiful illustrations of pint-sized Dana and Fox, this humorous and not-scary-at-all story will introduce the cult TV show to an entire new generation of fans.

Clearly I am five years old because this maybe one of my favorite things from X-Files team in years. Maybe because i can almost see David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson acting this out like a sketch in my head. Maybe because in an odd way this short picture book has more mythology material than the 2008 movie and 2015 Season 10.
I question whether kids can appreciate this book as much as me, without my reference of 24 years of X-Files fandom in their past .
I am sure my 9yo niece will love this. Overhearing her mother, my sister, binge watch the show on Netflix the past few years, somehow Reilly knows about Mulder looking for his sister. Clearly she is more than just eaves dropping, right?
I do fear a number of shippers out there are having a field day with Dana hosting Fox for a sleep over – especially as we see them ascend the stairs to sleep inside, after a backyard camping date goes awry.
As kids’ books goes, I feel I have seen this story before. Scully takes on the role of Bud Abbott to Mulder’s Lou Costello. It’s cute and effective.
If anything my biggest critique is that it’s too short. The book feels like an episode of a comic that, upon reaching the last page, one thinks, wow I spent a lot of money for a few pages and an incomplete story. I want more and would prefer the graffic novel in its entity than episodic pages – only so I can save by buying pages in bulk.
If you are a fan and have some kids, OR like me ARE a big kid, check this picture story out.
And for MSR fans….
Am I the only one hearing George Takei in my head right now?
I had a very interesting conversation yesterday. I was returning from set for a new HBO show filming on Long Island. Wrapped early, I had a private van ride back to Manhattan with another actor and a few stacks of costumes headed back to wardrobe in Brooklyn after our midtown drop-off.
The driver was a big sci-fi fan with a special place in his heart for X-Files. As a 1990’s teenager he watched The X-Files with his dad. (How many 30 something Philes can relate to that?) He does not watch a lot of TV now, nor has he been to the movies in three years. As a teamster driver for numerous film/TV sets and father of a 2 year old, he catches up via online streaming on his phone as shows hit Netflix, Amazon, HBO go etc – in between rides for actors like me.
While stuck in the Queens parking lot approaching the midtown tunnel, he promised to watch Season 10 the second it hits Netflix.
Excited he asked, “Are we getting more? ” “When?” He has not seen Season 10 and already asking…
My response was “yes, 2018, I think.”
So that started an entirely new discussion, one based more in our mutual knowledge of the industry.
This morning, cleaning out gmail, I stumbled across the article “David Duchovny knows the X-Files revival’s problem: Not enough of it” on AV Club. This convinced me to share the argument I made yesterday…
When you break it down all TV, film, youtube, podcasts, music, etc are “content”. Producing is all about creating content, and that has three major steps – pre-production (writing, fundraising, contracting/casting), production (filming/recording, editing, including post-production here) and distribution (marketing and getting content to you via TV, online, movie screen etc).
Philes all know about fundraising with the 2008 movie. We (most of us) wanted another big Alien Mythology episode. Big Alien movies cost $100 million. Chris got $30 million.
It would appear the money is not there to do Star Trek or Star Wars every 2-3 years. That would take 100 million views. We delivered about 10 million.
I think at this point in time a full X-Files series that includes David and Gillian is never going to happen. Both stars have other projects, kids and live outside LA/Vancouver. Neither is a hungry 20-30 something actor willing to give their lives 150% to a single project for 30 weeks/year.
I bet there have been numerous talks at FOX about how could one do X-Files without David & Gillian. Not that they want to cut out out faves, but how not to be held hostage by stars’ schedules and whims. But I think Seasons 8 & 9 of the original show, as well as the nature of the true fans, X-Files is all about Mulder & Scully, which can only be David & Gillian. No matter how hard Chris tries, his characters are far bigger than his stories. Slipping in some young hot look a likes was a total #FAIL in 2016, even as a joke. We are not CW types, right? So far FOX gets it. For now…
Chris really likes doing monster of the week.
The six episode season every two years makes complete sense.
Think about the intense online chatter throughout 2015 that built the audience for the January 2016 season. In 2002 we all needed a break – cast, crew and fans. 9 seasons of 20+ episodes is very hard to maintain. But by 2008 we were more than ready for more. By 2016 we were starving. By March 2016 we were “WTF?” “WE WANT MORE!” “WE WANT MORE!” “WE WANT MORE!”… rioting in the streets… Sorry, I got carried away there…
But am I the only one on February 22, 2016 at 9pm that screamed at the TV “FU MR. CARTER!!!” We are DEMANDING more…
If we could get another dose every two years like Trekkies and Fanboys (Star Wars – we need a new less sexist fan name), we would get our fix. We would be happy with a movie every two years to learn what happens with this conspiracy. But with a six episode arc Chris can have his monster of the week stories. TV is the writers medium. (Film is for directors. Stage for actors.) For TV the writer runs the show, while directors come and go. Chris can shape his baby, reflecting the times – politics, scandals etc.
Meanwhile we flock to see Gillian and David on stage – acting and singing. We flocked to David talking about his novels, most of us actually reading them. We are watching their other projects. They realize the bump all their work gets from the X-Files fandom being satisfied (strung along lol). A summer shooting X-Files every two years delivers a nice paycheck every actor wants without the burnout every actor hates and the platform every artist needs to promote their other work.
WIN-WIN-WIN!!! (Production – Cast – Fans)
Now to make this work, LISTEN UP CHRIS!!!
So we will see you in 2018, and daily on twitter till then…
PS – EIGHT Episodes could be cool…
X-Files Podcast Season 10 Recap and Episode Reviews
Episode 1: My Struggle
Walt, Laurice and Pat are back talking about a whole bunch of stuff including the review of “My Struggle”, attending and meeting some of the cast and writers at X-files premiere party in LA and singing on stage at a David Duchovny Concert. We argue over very important issues including noromos vs shippers, reboots with new actors, the X-files theme song, scruffy Mulder’s stubble and how in the world CSM is still alive.
Episode 2: Founder’s Mutation
Walt, Laurice and Pat talk about the Founders Mutation. Is Patrick still a considered a newborn baby phile? He has made it half way through season three and is currently watching the X-files revival with us. In this podcast, we discuss the show getting back to it’s stand alone episode format. We also talk about apple in a boob, William dream sequences with Mulder and Scully and the modern day references to current events throughout the episode.
Episode 3: Mulder & Scully Meet the Were-Monster
Improv comedians Walt, Pat and Laurice discuss The X-files Revival Episode 3: Mulder and Scully Meet the Weremonster. It’s clear that Patrick is still a baby phile (aka newborn) as he did not pick up on the many easter eggs in the episode. We also talk about X-Files Valentines, jackalopes, wolpertingers, being blocked on and/or muted on Twitter, creepy hotels and XF Tumblr fan blogs in a state of panic for fear of being discovered by the stars of the show.
Episode 4: Home Again
In this episode of the Most Awesome X-Files Podcast Ever (new fake name) Walt, Laurice and Pat discuss Episode 4 of the X-files revival: Home Again. We also talk about the combination of heartbreak and horror along with whether or not this episode of The X-Files brought US “home again.”
Episode 5: Babylon
Long time X-Files fans Walt Frasier and Laurice Fattal are joined by fellow improv comedian and baby-phile new comer Pat Reidy. There’s no way to skirt around the controversy in this episode and backlash from the fan community. We talk about it! We talk about what’s considered PC today in modern tv series vs what was acceptable in the 90s. We also talk about Mulder’s magic mushroom trip along with his epic dance moves, badonkadonk, and Tom Waits.
Long time X-Files fans Walt Frasier and Laurice Fattal are joined by fellow improv comedian and baby-phile new comer Patrick Reidy. In this episode we talk about The X-files SEASON finale: My Struggle 2. This is the End! Or is it? More Tom Waits here! We also talk about fan outrage/backlash, Chris Carter hate and press reviews and our personal reviews of Season 10. Patrick is ready for six more hours of magic mushroom trips with Mulder country line dancing.
X-Files has been my favorite show for all of my adulthood. So when Darin Morgan inserted this many Easter Eggs – and amazingly funny moments – into one episode, I just have to say, thanks. The episode is equally a tribute to many X-Files moments of yore and wonderfully creatively written.
The episode starts with Stoner #1 (Tyler Labine) and Stoner #2 (Nicole Parker) sniffing paint from a brown bag. I spent the next hour cackling at the gags and jokes. Stoners 1 & 2 of course have previously appeared in Quagmire and War of the Coprophages (both 1996). It is interesting to note, both episodes were directed by Kim Manners, who we will talk more about later.
Our paint bag stoners hear a noise and discover a giant lizard man wrestling with animal control agent, Pasha (Kumail Nanjiani, X-Files fan and podcaster). The lizard hisses and runs away, through our stoner couple. DUDE! A lot of dudes have been attacked and killed, with teeth marks to the throat, and one missing their clothes.
When we first see Mulder, he is using the I WANT TO BELIEVE SIGN as a pencil dart board. No more room on the ceiling?
“Mulder, what are you doing to MY poster?” Scully enters to Mulder oozing self doubt in his past beliefs. Mulder admits he is middle aged and his new wisdom is causing second guessing.
“Mulder, have you been taking your meds?” Scully.
To be truthful, the comedy is a little forced. But I was immensely entertained, so who cares?
CUT TO Mulder and Scully in the woods looking for monsters. Mulder for once is trying to find reasoning without paranormal explanations.
“Aw Scully, I gave up profiling before I gave up monsters. You’ve seen one serial killer you’ve seen them all!” Mulder.
The were-monster is next seen attacking a truck stop transvestite hooker. As they hear a scary roar, Mulder and Scully run to the action while the animal control officer runs the other way.
The ongoing theme in this episode is Mulder’s “SMART PHONE” camera app acting up.
They chase the were-lizard into a port-o-potty where they only find what seems to be a traveling salesman (Rhys Darby). Perhaps a nod to Darin’s own time in a camp side john as the Flukeman, Host Season 2.
Mulder is very impressed with smart phone camera techniques, including video of himself scream hysterically.
“The internet is not good for you” Scully says of Mulder’s explanations.
Back at the motel, Mulder suddenly wakes by screaming manager, drunk on rubbing alcohol. “Please go away or I’ll kill ya.”
I was cracking up at the bear rug on the wall. Mulder finds the former guest room torn apart, leading to a hidden passageway, with Fox peering at Scully though a huge dead wall-mounted fox’s eyes.
Of course this is when we see the Motel Manager checking out Mulder sleeping in his red briefs, before witnessing the were-monster’s transformation.
This is a cheeky nod to the famous Mulder speedo scene from Season 2 episode, Duane Barry.
Mulder is beside himself as he tries to convince Scully of the truth, with a few theories, and the need to check out of the motel immediately.
David Duchovny’s arguing with himself was perfectly performed with impeccable delivery of both Mulder’s reasonings and Scully’s rebuttals.
“Yeah, this is how I like my Mulder” Scully. “Your bat crap crazy”
Mulder tracks down the witch doctor / psychologist via Guy Mann’s prescriptions.
“Werewolf was my patient on Monday” Doc.
The doctor tries to give anti-psychotic drug prescription to Mulder for believing the were-lizard’s story.
After meeting Scully at the SMART PHONES IS US store, Mulder finds Guy Mann at the cemetery, where we also see a head stone tribute to late Kim Manners. This brought an emotional response from the entire fandom.
The following monologue and interchange was absolutely brilliant. From Guy Man trying to get Mulder to kill him, to his origin story (a human bite turning him from a reptilian creature into a were-lizard), to lying about having sex with Scully (fell out of chair here), to being driven by the desires/fears of a middle aged man (job, burgers, morning coffee, depression, revenge, lying about sex life, etc).
Guy Mann got a dog. “…the only way to be happy as a human, was to spend all your time in the company of non humans” Guy Mann loses dog.
Guy explains his confrontation with the trans-gendered professional.
“She hit like a man” Guy
“Because she used to be a…” Mulder
“I’ll do the surgery” Guy
“They cut off your genitals” Mulder
“That’s a but too far…” Guy
“I’m just looking for some internal logic” Mulder grasps for understanding.
“Why, there is no external logic” Guy
By the end Guy is running off calling Mulder the monster.
Mulder drinks away the moment.
Mulder wakes to his X-Files ringtone sleeping at the base of Kim Manner’s headstone. It’s Scully at the animal control center. Scully gets attacked. Mulder runs to save her, but Scully already apprehended the killer. Mulder runs off to see Guy. Scully steals the dog.
Will the puppy survive the season?
The puppy’s name, Daggoo, is also a character from Moby Dick. “He reminds me of Queequeg” (The Pomeranian Scully adopted in “Clyde Bruckman’s Final Repose” and lost in “Quagmire” to Big Blue).
“I did not know reptile hibernated” Mulder
“That’s racist. I’m not a reptile” Guy
Mulder seems content seeing the actual transformation.
“I’m glad to have met you” Guy
Thank you to Darin Morgan and the gang for delivering what might be my new favorite episode. Brilliantly written and wonderfully performed by David, Gillian and Rhys.
In fact, going one step further, I would like to start the Award Season Buzz here. I nominate Rhys Darby (https://twitter.com/rhysiedarby) for special guest Emmy. Do I have a second?
— The X-Files (@thexfiles) February 2, 2016
X-Files is back and like past episodes and movies, creator Chris Carter always roots his science fiction in real science and popular conspiracy theories. After watching The X-Files “My Struggle” for a fifth time tonight, my geeky side got curious.
In a recent phone conference call, Chris Carter admitted he attended conventions and conferences filled with conspiracy theorists and that we would be amazed and surprised at the numerous Americans and the theories they hold dear.
Sounds like to many, X-Files is a documentary, not fiction.
But some of the science is real. Well at least based in real theories at least.
GARNER: It runs on .. so called zero point energy.
MULDER: Free energy?
O’MALLEY (Joel McHale): Available since the 1940s
The Zero Point Energy (ZPE) is an intrinsic and unavoidable part of quantum physics. The ZPE has been studied, both theoretically and experimentally, since the discovery of quantum mechanics in the 1920s and there can be no doubt that the ZPE is a real physical effect. SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN
Conspiracy Theories that Tesla discovered FREE self sustaining energy over 100 years ago have floated for years. The big oil companies have buried this in favor of trillions in oil sales, as pointed out by Mulder. CLICK HERE for one fear mongering report.
SOURCE WIKI https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ununpentium
MULDER: Gravity Warp Drive, but how?
GARNER: Element 115. Ununpentium.
MULDER: Where did you get it?
Not that there really are ARVs out there, but Ununpentium Element 115 is real. In fact, just this past December 2015, it was recognized by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC). So if you go back to college and take Chemistry, your periodic tables will soon need to be updated.
UUP, you know me!!
The element was named back in 1979 by the IUPAC.
The element was first synthetically created in 2003 by American and Russian teams. 4 atoms – I know its amazing – were created and gone in 100 milliseconds.
A number of scientific teams tried to recreate the experiments from 2003. In 2015 a team from Berkeley published they had successfully produced the element.
But with a half-life of only 220 milliseconds, Alien Replica Vehicles would need a lot of UUP and some very impressive alien technology to stabilize the highly radioactive element.
