DUCHOVNIACS EXCLUSIVE: David Duchovny interview with Walt & Laurice – New Album, Novel, #theXFiles MSR insights

Thank you to David Duchovny and all his team – we love you Brad & Kerry – for making this happen. Beyond flattered we had the time of our lives speaking with David about EVERY THIRD THOUGHT album and upcoming tour in Australia and New Zealand.

I was floored when David brought up me wearing the milk carton T-Shirt and preparing to stage dive into my arms…

THIS description of Miss Subways has me more eager than ever to read a Novel by David Duchovny. This sounds fascinating. So much more than I expected.

And finally, David’s insight into the discussion between David and Chris Carter working out the end of #XFplusone was a truly unexpected delight.

DAVID DUCHOVNY NYC LISTENING PARTY Recap “Every Third Thought”

DAVID DUCHOVNY NEW YORK LISTENING PARTY DELIVERED Sorry no photos or videos or sound clips. The album does not officially release untill February 9. So let’s respect the artists and producers.

PHOTOS from the event to be posted HERE in the next 48 hours

Today was special.

I am so moved by these songs I just have to share some thoughts.

DAVID DUCHOVNY NEW YORK LISTENING PARTY DELIVERS

@waltfrasier @lauricef @duchovniacs

David Duchovny was joined on stage today with Pat McCusker, Colin Lee, Mitchell Stewart and Sebastian Modak, interviewed my Monique McQueen (Great Job moderating the Q&A) as we all got to listen to the entire new album, EVERY THIRD THOUGHT.  The listening party attendees all left feeling expectations were surpassed.

Kerry Lee announced the day’s activities while Sam Platt played DJ, throwing down three tracks at a time with question and answer sessions in between.

With all the songs, David feels he’s writing country songs, because that’s how he sounds alone with his guitar. Monique says these songs pass the “campfire test”. You can break them down to singers and guitar and they hold up.

SET ONE

First up was HALF LIFE. Laurice remarks that the tempo seems a bit livelier – More energetic. This was the first of many that seemed ready for radio play. At the very minimum, ready for movie soundtrack. On tour, David will joke this song is about science. “Unconditional Love Decays….”.

David says he had a David Bowie feel in mind orginally.

The words are a bit sad. Half Life appears to refer to half of your life los tin a break up but leaving with you empty – “with nothing” – inside. But the music driving the story is also about moving past and picking up the pieces and working though the worst of it.

For those that have heard this song on tour, you are in for a treat. The guys (Pat, Colin, Mitch, Sebastian and other – Hanna rocking some strings, etc.) really had some freedom to play. If you listen carefully, the music is almost playful with subtle rhythmic and countrapuntal flourishes hiding – coyly sneaking through – beneath the surface of lead vocals, intros and bridges.

I had a question about the writing of the song. When the song is live, David appears to want to take the middle of the chorus to a V chord (B chord in the Key of E). David will often drop G# at the end of the word indivisible to a F# which would imply in some he wants the chord to go to the B (D# F#). In most music a phase will end with a strong V-I (5-1). My question was “Did the song original move to a B chord there? I feel David is trying to pull the band down to a 5 chord”

David responds, “You think I’m dragging them down?” (Laughs)

Pat, Colin and I discussed among ourselves about the music theory. David makes a cat sound and says “perhaps you fellas should take this outside…” Long story short we had WAY TOO MUCH FUN TODAY.

EVERY THIRD THOUGHT in contrast is a tad slower and more in the pocket from the live version we have heard the past two years – originally heard by fans in Europe 2016. The arrangement is slightly more exposed, revealing some hip rhythmic hits and vocal harmonies. This was always my vote for the album’s title track. David was pushing for Strangers (in the Sacred Heart).

The final song of the first set was MAYBE I CAN’T. We need this album TODAY to fully digest the new stuff in depth.

Set Two

– Strangers in the Sacred Heart
– Mo’
– Someone Else’s Girl

All three of these songs are known to us from live concerts over the past two years. All three are similar and familiar, but each had their moments where, again, the band got to play. Especially Someone Else’s Girl, which David attributed to Pat from start to finish, taking the lead on the arrangement.  This is the “feel good” track with it’s bouncy reggae feel. Love me some Pat! Laurice says this may be her favorite tune on the album.

David recounted his story of writing STRANGER while gigging in Paris last year, tying his own father’s story to the folks praying for strangers at Sacre Couer. We love Hanna Reid’s violins. Laurice calls it baroque pop, mixing in the classical sounds with the pop rock. If you have not caught Hanna, live, find her in your town. There were also some cathedral chimes and other interesting sounds that helped painted the picture.

David says MO is about over consumption with influences of Fleetwood Mac.MO is familiar, but you can tell David and the band put a lot of work into cleaning up the arrangements and kicking out near perfection. Pat has a very sweet guitar solo I think fans are going to dig.

David went further to say, songs are less of a statement, and more of a cloud, “what ever that means.”

Q: What was the process of writing this album, compared to the first?
A: David said it was more collaborative. Sebastian (Percussionist) said there are a lot more chances, especially with percussion. The other guys elaborated on finding a safe place to speak up and out for ideas.

Q: Does doing all the music and concert touring feel surreal?
David: I wouldn’t say surreal. No, it feels good. If feels… (Audience supplies “Organic” – giggles) Why do I keep seeing that “Organic” in quotes (Finger quote gesture).

“ORGANIC” Is that a meme?  David asked the band.

David forgot “ORGANIC” comes from his answer from a previous Facebook Q&A and it stuck. There were unasked questions of possible double meanings in the following looks but it was left at that.

SET THREE may have been my favorite, with two new songs that blew my mind.

WHEN THE WHISTLE BLOWS started and right away the whole crowd is bobbing heads, tapping feet. It is an amazing song. About half way through I lean over to Laurice, “I think this is my new fave.” Angry Blues Rock song was also the favorite for some of the band.

SPIRAL is a song written by Pat and Colin. David admits a little jealousy when folks say this is their favorite tune from their album. Not sure if it was my third homemade pineapple vodka (homemade by restaurant, I did not sneak in booze), being caught up in the moment, or the song was just that amazing, I started to tear up. I leaned to Laurice. Not hearing me, she shoves pen/paper in my hand. I write “FUCKING AWESOME!!!” She exclaims, “you wasted space on her diminishing note paper space.” The moment was otherwise beyond words.

The set was rounded by another concert tour favorite, Roman Coin. Again, like some of the earlier tunes, this was just a cleaner, better mixed version of the song we have come to love.

SET FOUR

SET FOUR has two new songs to us and one that is relatively new, after David debuted Marble Sun in Vancouver last fall.

JERICHO is a bit sad. This tune hit close to home with Laurice as David discussed it’s connection with his father. When the album releases I will give a more in depth review of the song. Hearing it for the first time, I was just taking it in.

LAST FIRST TIME to be fair did not get my full focus and attention. Mainly because I was reflecting deeply on the third set. Again, this was the first time we’ve heard this track and I would like a second listen before further discussion.

MARBLE SUN is one of the new songs that has popped into my head often in the past months since Vancouver. My only criticism today was the percussion track seemed to overpower the song. This is a simple mix issue. The song otherwise is a perfect end. I am not sure you call this a concept album. Every song works as a single, but there are some stylistic themes.

David said this song was an idea from Colin and many ways the most collaborative song on the album, and perhaps his new favorite.

IN CONCLUSION – To put today into perspective

Most came to HELL OR HIGHWATER because of love for David’s work as Fox Mulder or Hank Moody. At least half of the fans at early concerts didn’t even know they were attending an actual concert.

“AN EVENING WITH DAVID DUCHOVNY? What is he doing, Stand-Up Comedy” –this is a direct quote from at least three people I encountered during the first year of concerts.

When I first heard the early release of WHEN THE TIME COMES, I was working on some contracts and Laurice was playing the track. The first lyric I really heard was “Jack and Jill, ran out on their bill…” WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS was my thought.

I did not take this at all seriously until May 12, 2015 at the Cutting Room. Many have heard the story of Laurice, myself and 10 other fans hanging out for pizza, lining up crazy early, sitting right in front of a barefoot Pat and later a singing, dancing,  tambourine beating and shaking Gillian Anderson.

I bought an album that night. While everyone else was talking/tweeting about THE KISS (Cue melodramatic music) Listened to it a few times. Two days later I started this blog.

The DUCHOVNIACS were born, or at least something more official. (It was a slow journey with 25 years of fans slowing finding each other at events and expanding. 25-30 concerts later – and New Zealand / Australia bound in three weeks for 6 more (Skipping Wellington for some more time in Melbourne) – I am a bigger fan of the music (as it’s own entity) than ever..

For most fans, HELL OR HIGHWATER was about David Duchovny getting to play and share an experience with his friends and fans. A comiccon meet & greet on crack.  Something to hold us over between X-Files and other projects. Out of the millions of X-Files fans around the world, there may be a few thousand that really give the music it’s fair shake to date.

EVERY THIRD THOUGHT will change all that. This no longer some celebrity doing the band thing. This is a legit BAND that happens to have David Duchovny’s celebrity status to open doors and sell tickets. This album deserves attention beyond the X-Files and Californication fandom.

I challenge everyone that will take the time to read this to do a blind test. Play a few of these new songs for friends. Make them guess the band name. These songs stand on their own, many ready for 2018 radio play. Most ready for movie soundtracks and other commercial use.  All ready to rock Auckland, Wellington, Melbourne, Sydney, Wollogong, New Castle and Brisbane next month.

See you down under!!!

PS- Super excited to hear some of the acoustic tracks coming. As much as I love the original album, the songs written by David and shaped by the band have become so much more as the musical relationship has grown over the past 4 years now (if you include initial writing, rehearsing and recording times).

THANKS must be given to Brad Davidson and Kerry Lee. If you have not met these two, they are usually at the door or running around doing the jobs of 3-4 each.

The Ballad of David and Mitch original fan song lyrics

I am beyond flattered
My brain is so scattered
And its barely after dawn
There’s an intense tug of war
What’s all this fighting for
But am I just a pawn

16825808_10154159637130780_3735488746841963208_o

Driving south from Jersey to Alexandria concert I dictated the song to my wife. Lacking paper and pen, she just texted me back what I said.

Tired of the battle
Hearded like cattle
Just to get in the front row
But you know I came
When you called my name
Am I just a fan or a braugh

16807618_10155311035743287_5928047888687587450_n

Outside the Birchmere I finished the lyrics and worked out the melody/chords. There were 3-4 musical versions before settling on the final chords and notes.

Duchovny or Pileggi
Where does my allegiance lie
Pileggi or Duchovny
Weren’t they both in the FBI

Mitch took a selfie with me Mr wearing a cape and tights
Dressed as superman I must have looked such a fright
David must have realized that it wasn’t my fault
When he said at wizard world, shut up walt

TEAM EFFORT. Laurice took care of hair and make up as I worked out the music. Maja was cue card/ human teleprompter. Charnette filmed. Dita and Karen (Blonde Girl) were my back up singers.

So it’s time for a choice
I’m giving it voice
Duchovniacs or Mitch’s Bitches
The choice is hard
I need help from the bard
I’ve not yet put on britches

But Mitch makes me complete
When he answers my tweet
My allegiance is so torn

I love both of you
Capable of loving two
Making me choose is really not fair
It’s the end of my song
I’m not wearing a thong
The truth is out there

Flu nor Virus Can’t Stop Duchovny, Whistle While You Work Birchmere Alexandria VA 2/26/2017

For more sites/Sounds follow us on twitter. TAG US and we will retweet your photos/videos

Three big highlights tonight.

  1. OPENING ACT ROCKED – K. Marie Kim is a genius sound engineer that makes David sound amazing every night. Turns out she sings and plays piano and really knows how to make musical toys (special effects) work better than most. (See post below)
  2. COLIN CAN REALLY WHISTLE – The band played a scaled down LATELY IT’s ALWAYS DECEMBER with Keenan carrying tune Acoustic Guitar,  Pat laying down what Pat does (beyond words), and Colin shaking his egg (rhythm toy – percussion). But then busted out a solo whistling what he often plays on the keys. It was so perfect. The guys also had more back up harmonizing vocals – or perhaps we just heard a cooler blend with less instrumentation. IF ANYONE HAS VIDEO PLEASE SHARE
  3. DAVID WAS SICK (read below)

A post shared by Walt Frasier (@waltfrasier) on

We cannot say for certain what it was but David was not feeling well tonight. A fever was reported by DD himself and there were other signs of issues, but we will skip any talk of bodily fluids.

That being said I noticed something…

Those that follow closely will remember David being sick in Luxembourg last May. He powered through but was noticeably feeling awful.

You may have also read my blog from Friday (Saturday AM) about how impressed I was with David in Jersey.

At first tonight, when they said David was not feeling well, I thought – I wonder if David just is not used to powering through that hard (Friday’s performance) and needed time to recover.

When you are not used to that much singing at that intensity, it can take a couple days to recover. Even Opera singers only do two show each week.

I personally had zero voice Saturday just from screaming and dancing. It took everything I had to sing Man of La Mancha ending for Mitch Pileggi via twitter conversation. But when I went to sing another song with Duchovniacs, I virtually passed out on stage.

Tonight was another sign of David’s maturity as a singer. Despite vocal issues, he never once suffered regarding pitch. His voice was gruff but that works for this bluesy folk rock music.   David is the consummate story teller.

What I did notice is something that happens to a seasoned live performer. While it hurts and you feel like you are falling way short of your best, you are so hyper focus to over compensate for illness/fatigue, your over all performance is actually better than other times.

Perhaps that big money note lacks, but the rest of the performance is that much more connected.

Lyrical pretty singers/songs suffer greater from illness. But the story teller just sounds like he/she had too many smokes, which is not terrible for this style. The result is – as David put it – sounding more like Joe Cocker (or Janice Joplin for the ladies).

But beyond one or two moments where David paused for some tea, the over all performance was great. He danced a little less but the performance was perhaps even more filled with soul and meaning from the lyrics. As we learning musical theater, act through the song, don’t sing it.

Just 10 month ago David did not succeed as well under similar circumstances. We still loved the shows but some notes were flat. They might be flat in good health.

Here is what I told a number of new fan friends…

  1. David is a crazy awesome writer.
  2. His Celeb status gave him access to some off the charts amazing musicians that carried him the past 2 years musically.
  3. He is now coming into his own as a singer/musician. He is clearly working on his instrument, and now has enough live performance experience to know how to process the instrument under distress.

Almost anyone can sing pretty for a few moments. But it takes training to learn how to keep a voice healthy even when the body is not. It takes time to build up that endurance.

The voice is a muscle that needs developing.

For all his struggles tonight, I heard some decent notes in David’s upper register I don’t think were there just 8-10 months ago.

The audience still got a great performance. Better than many/most from before the past two weeks. I would still put tonight in top three of this past two weeks.

If nothing else, I am not sure David could have done “Lately It’s Always December” like that a week ago. That is a tough song and he was more exposed than ever. I am so craving acoustic tour / online videos / tracks…

More for those that question what David does in his concerts form the perspective of the drummer – although I would call Sebastian a percussionist. Great Musician!

In May, associate digital editor Sebastian Modak headed overseas to drum his way through Europe as part of David Duchovny’s band. Eleven cities, eight countries, and many, many miles in an overcrowded tour bus later, here are some of his most valuable takeaways, including the joy of finding perfect churros in Madrid—and how to stay sane when you’re spending every waking minute with your colleagues.

The Things

Lyrics and Music by David Duchovny

The things you said were not untrue
The things you wore were ok too
The things you kept, the things you threw, away
The things you thought I never knew will stay

The love I showed was partly cold, ah
The things I said were mostly true
The things you did were partly known
The dreams I have will go untold, yeah

They say with fate deals
Time heals all wounds
Well tell that to my heart that bleeds
Cause if the hand of fate and time were truly be by my side
I could look at you today without сryin’

The thing I was to you was gone
The thing were to me was blue
The thing I wanted to unfold and turn
Like paper tigers into gold or burn

They say with fate deals
Time heals all wounds
Well tell that to my heart that bleeds
Cause if the hand of fate and time were truly be by my side
I could look at you today without dyin’

David Duchovny LIVE on Stage

Lyrics and Music by David Duchovny

INTRO – G

I’ve been told that some stars in the sky
Shine a light from stars that have died long ago
That explains when I look in your eyes
I see the light from a love that died long ago

When the fire is dead
How can it be that the sparks still fly?
The ghost you left in my bed
Stars you showed on my empty sky
Still shine, in my head

I will ask of the stars in the sky
If it’s true that they’re no longer alive anymore
If they still keep on shining their light
So that I might find my way home tonight

When the fire is dead
How can it be that the sparks still fly?
The ghost you left in my bed
Stars you showed on my empty sky
Still shine, in my head

So I will ask of the light in your eyes
The ghost of a love that died long ago
Can they still keep on shining, shining your light
So that I might find my way home
One more night tonight

CHORDS

STARS loosely follows the classic pattern of Pachelbel Canon in D, also made popular in Elvis’ Can’t Help Falling in Love. The bass line gently descends the major scale until resolving the end of a line with a simple V – I into the next line.

Bass line for the verse looks like this G F# E D C B A D

The Chords slight change between the first and second time of the patter in the verse. Over the F# we get a simple D chord the first time. The second time we get the stronger B7 that drives more to the em chord.

NYCC Screening: X-Files Episode 10-01 Duchovniacs Recap/Review SPOILER ALERT

X-FILES BIGGER BADDER & UNCUT 2016 by Walt Frasier October 15, 2015

First off – OUR NYCC Escapades!

lNYCC

wnycc

WHAT EVER YOU DO – DO NOT READ THIS ARTICLE…

So I am guessing I am one of about 5000 that have seen the premier episode that will be seen on FOX in January 2016. Maybe more as I have heard rumors that the truth is out there online somewhere.

If you have NOT seen episode CLOSE THIS WINDOW NOW!!!

Overall, I cannot dismiss the fact I was giddy with happy tears the entire 90 minutes of watching new episode and listening to panel with Chris Carter, David Duchovny and Mitch Pileggi. Perhaps I was out of control emotionally due to extreme exhaustion after waiting in lines for 8 hours to get a front row seat only to get a 4th row seat… I digress. Except for a brief awkward moment when Deadpool asked a question about Supernatural (Mitch fans, right?) it was pure ecstasy!

YOU’VE BEEN WARNED!!!

So this entire episode felt like one big hug, saying we thank you and miss you too. Scully, Mulder, Skinner and even… well you know, right… they all had a specific entrance. Every major character had a welcome back moment, and each moment had thunderous applause. We ate it up like candy.

VINI VIDI VICI! This episode took no prisoners!!!

There is a noticeable style shift. At times this episode seemed like a 45-minute teaser trailer. The episode flies by at break neck speed. The old dark imagery – mainly due to hiding low budget effects – has been replaced by “let’s show everything.”

BIGGEST SPOILER WARNING YET – PLEASE TURN AWAY…

NOW!!!

SERIOUSLY!!!

YOU’VE BEEN WARNED!!!

While discussing the episode over burgers and milkshakes I joked with my crew – Chris Carter basically took all of our critism of the 2008 movie and said – in a fit of rage  –

“FINE, you want to see aliens? (SMACK IN FACE) HERE is a mothra ducking alien!!!”

“You want to see UFOS? (SMACK IN FACE)  HERE is a Gosh Darn UFO!”

“You want action? Let’s blow it all up!!!” (GAUNTLET THROWN)

(Insert maniacal hysterical insane laughter here- Chris Carter as Dr. Evil LOL)

My guess is 18-35 year old demographic will love the big action fast paced feel. Fans of the old show’s tone my think Chris Carter has been replaced by George Lucas or Michael Bay at the helm.

And to quickly address the elephant in the room, I love the new direction of Mulder/Scully. We don’t know if they were ever married at this time. Not even sure we should take David Duchovny’s use of the term at face value.

When we last saw Mulder and Scully they were together.

Since then it appears Mulder’s inability to deal with the world outside the FBI has lead to a dark place. Scully left him. Now he is even more depressed. What is clear?

They are currently apart.

There is a lot of resentment from both sides.

They both still love each other.

Chances are working together on 4 monster of the week episodes will have tons of tension.

But this is far different from the old days when so many were consumed by “Are they together? Are they apart? Where would they be if not for that damn bee?” So many lost way too much sleep on such questions.

Going forward I think Chris Carter is more successful when he collaborates. That’s why we get Glen Morgan, James Wong and Darin Morgan in the next 4 episodes.

I am haunted by the final moments of the episode. I fear we will have to wait till mid March to see the outcome of the long ominous gaze by… well, you will just have to watch in January. Those that have seen it know exactly what I am talking about.

I have an alternate review planned for January 25 that will go into far more detail…

See everyone in DC 10/26!!!
