David Duchovny returns to Twin Peaks (Spoilers) Our Recap

David Duchovny returns to Twin Peaks

CAUTION THERE ARE SPOILERS IN THIS  SHORT RECAP OF DAVID’S  TWIN PEAKS RETURN AS DENISE.

If you have not watched up through Episode 4, be prepared to be spoiled completely about David’s scene!

First of all, we never anticipated David’s scene to actually be with David Lynch. How awesome is that? What a nice treat. Not only reprising his character in a cameo of iconic tv show, but having the opportunity to do that cameo with the shows creator. It can’t get better than that.

There was also a wink-nod to X-files fans:

If you are up to date on the series, you already know that Lynch has returned as FBI Deputy Gordon Cole, with the character of Gordon playing an even larger role than in the original series this go-round.

After being escorted into her office by none other than Richard Chamberlin’s “Bill Kennedy”, Gordon enters the office of the Chief of Staff and is notified that she is in a meeting.

Denise, now the Chief of Staff, enters with a big smile on her face. She thanks Gordon for coming in and asks him “what have you got?”

“It’s Cooper” Gordon says “We’ve found him”

When Gordon explains they found Cooper (unaware it’s actually Cooper’s doppleganger), in South Dakota, Denise says she heard.

Denise questions Gordon about bringing the beautiful younger agent Preston with him to South Dakota. “Really Gordon?” she quips..

capture-20170524-010322

“What are you getting at” asks Gordon.  Denise shoots her an inquisitive look, brilliantly played by Duchovny.

Gordon then refers back to a time when he was her boss. Gordon points out how he supported her through her transition from Denis to Denise. ” .. when you became Denise, I told all your colleagues – those clown comics, to fix their hearts or die.”

Denise replies “As I’ve said many times before Gordon, I can never repay you enough for that kindness.” –Again a very heartfelt and sincere moment between the two characters, well played by both actors.

Gordon mentions that “Agent Tammy Preston has the stuff..”

Denise says she is speaking more as a woman now rather than the Chief of Staff of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.. adding the funny line– “..Don’t you love saying that line at once. Federal Bureau of Investigation all at once. Unabbreviated? It just gives me such a thrill!”

Gordon agrees it is thrilling. Denise mentions that agent Preston is “so beautiful.”  Gordon replies by flattering Denise stating “There’s room in this Federal Bureau of Investigation for more than one beautiful woman.”

capture-20170524-012439

Apparently flattery will get you everywhere! This makes Denise blush.  “You know normally I can’t think like this. I have to forgo all that and grow balls of steel to do this job and it’s.. it’s a bitch–let me tell you sometimes. Not to mentions the screaming hormones”

Gordon’s response hormones comment …

capture-20170524-012847

Denise apologizes, saying that she trusts Gordon, “And I believe you’re on the trail of something big” she says. “10-4 Good buddy” Gordon responds.

After Gordon exits, we see a wide shot of Denise standing behind her desk fanning herself.

capture-20170524-014218

The scene was very sweet and cute. It was nice to see this character again and to see her in an authoritative powerful government position.

We’re very happy Denise had a chance to make her return in the series. Twin Peaks fans have been expressing their delight in seeing David reprise his role.

We also did an hour long live video vlog discussion (Yes ONE HOUR) about episodes 1-4. I apologize for the sound. Something happened during the streaming process. Again don’t watch unless you want to discuss in detail everything that happened in those episodes.

In Their Lives Hits Shelves Today (May 23)

The Beatles’ iconic album, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, turns fifty on June 1, and, to celebrate, the book In Their Lives hits shelves today (May 23).

Edited by Andrew Blauner, the book features essays by the likes of Roz Chast on “She Loves You,” Jane Smiley on “I Want to Hold Your Hand,” Rosanne Cash on “No Reply,” Gerald Early on “I’m a Loser,” Rick Moody on “The End,” Maria Popova on “Yellow Submarine,” David Duchovny on “Dear Prudence,” Chuck Klosterman on “Helter Skelter,” David Hadju on “You Know My Name (Look Up the Number)” and more.

David Duchovny & Gillian Anderson Talk X-files Season 11 (E! Red Carpet)

David Duchovny & Gillian Anderson on “X-Files” Revival | E! Live from the Red Carpet

David and Gillian answered several X-files related questions about the upcoming Season 11. When asked about the Season 10 cliffhanger with Mulder and Scully, both seem to be in the dark about what Chris Carter has planned for their characters. “Chris Carter has not told me yet whether I’ve managed to save the human race” Gillian told E! “But given that we’re doing ten episodes that I save it for ten episodes worth of time.”

David also commented on something that MANY fans have literally been begging for on twitter, blogs and other social media platforms – the possibility of him contributing to the writing team “I don’t think that the people playing the characters are the best judges of where the show should go. Nor do I think the fans are to be honest with you”

(insert screaming face emoji here)

I do think that the show would benefit from David contributing to the story arcs as he did in the past. Some of my favorite mythology episode arcs were those that he developed with Chris Carter. They were some of the best episodes of the series in my opinion.

In regards to doing an X-files musical episode David laughed and said “I don’t think that’s a good idea but I’d be down for it. Sure.” Gillian on the other hand made it clear it was not something she would want to do “No. Nah-uh. No. No. No” she said.

While we clearly adore David’s music and have no doubt they could both make it work, I would have to side with Gillian on this one.

David Duchovny & Gillian Anderson at the FOX Upfronts & Webby Awards

Excited for The X-files Season 11 yet? We’re definitely getting there! Here is something to hold you over until we (hopefully) start getting set pictures in August.

The elephant in the room – David’s arm is in a sling! We don’t know what happened but we hope it wasn’t too painful and hope he’s on his way to a speedy recovery. Between his injury and Gillian Anderson’s broken foot, it was an interesting sight on stage at the Webby Awards. David presented Gillian with the Best Actress award for her critically acclaimed role on The Fall.

The Webby awards ceremony will be available to watch on Youtube tomorrow.

In the meantime, we have some clips we have gathered from around the Twitterverse.

WHAT EVER YOU DO – DO NOT READ THIS ARTICLE…

So I am guessing I am one of about 5000 that have seen the premier episode that will be seen on FOX in January 2016. Maybe more as I have heard rumors that the truth is out there online somewhere.

If you have NOT seen episode CLOSE THIS WINDOW NOW!!!

Overall, I cannot dismiss the fact I was giddy with happy tears the entire 90 minutes of watching new episode and listening to panel with Chris Carter, David Duchovny and Mitch Pileggi. Perhaps I was out of control emotionally due to extreme exhaustion after waiting in lines for 8 hours to get a front row seat only to get a 4th row seat… I digress. Except for a brief awkward moment when Deadpool asked a question about Supernatural (Mitch fans, right?) it was pure ecstasy!

YOU’VE BEEN WARNED!!!

So this entire episode felt like one big hug, saying we thank you and miss you too. Scully, Mulder, Skinner and even… well you know, right… they all had a specific entrance. Every major character had a welcome back moment, and each moment had thunderous applause. We ate it up like candy.

VINI VIDI VICI! This episode took no prisoners!!!

There is a noticeable style shift. At times this episode seemed like a 45-minute teaser trailer. The episode flies by at break neck speed. The old dark imagery – mainly due to hiding low budget effects – has been replaced by “let’s show everything.”

BIGGEST SPOILER WARNING YET – PLEASE TURN AWAY…

NOW!!!

SERIOUSLY!!!

YOU’VE BEEN WARNED!!!

While discussing the episode over burgers and milkshakes I joked with my crew – Chris Carter basically took all of our critism of the 2008 movie and said – in a fit of rage  –

“FINE, you want to see aliens? (SMACK IN FACE) HERE is a mothra ducking alien!!!”

“You want to see UFOS? (SMACK IN FACE)  HERE is a Gosh Darn UFO!”

“You want action? Let’s blow it all up!!!” (GAUNTLET THROWN)

(Insert maniacal hysterical insane laughter here- Chris Carter as Dr. Evil LOL)

My guess is 18-35 year old demographic will love the big action fast paced feel. Fans of the old show’s tone my think Chris Carter has been replaced by George Lucas or Michael Bay at the helm.

And to quickly address the elephant in the room, I love the new direction of Mulder/Scully. We don’t know if they were ever married at this time. Not even sure we should take David Duchovny’s use of the term at face value.

When we last saw Mulder and Scully they were together.

Since then it appears Mulder’s inability to deal with the world outside the FBI has lead to a dark place. Scully left him. Now he is even more depressed. What is clear?

They are currently apart.

There is a lot of resentment from both sides.

They both still love each other.

Chances are working together on 4 monster of the week episodes will have tons of tension.

But this is far different from the old days when so many were consumed by “Are they together? Are they apart? Where would they be if not for that damn bee?” So many lost way too much sleep on such questions.

Going forward I think Chris Carter is more successful when he collaborates. That’s why we get Glen Morgan, James Wong and Darin Morgan in the next 4 episodes.

I am haunted by the final moments of the episode. I fear we will have to wait till mid March to see the outcome of the long ominous gaze by… well, you will just have to watch in January. Those that have seen it know exactly what I am talking about.

I have an alternate review planned for January 25 that will go into far more detail…

See everyone in DC 10/26!!!
